PREPARATION FOR CHILDBIRTH

PREPARATION FOR CHILDBIRTH

How do I prepare my body for natural childbirth?

A pregnant woman is offered, by the midwife who is following her, to take childbirth preparation classes. With an average of eight classes to follow, the objective is to prepare the mother-to-be physically and psychologically. Childbirth preparation is particularly recommended for a first pregnancy. Many methods currently exist: classical, haptonomy, sophrology, prenatal singing, acupuncture, yoga… You can take them in group classes or alone, at the hospital or with a private midwife… There is only the embarrassment of choice! The objective is to inform and practice to better combat apprehensions and questions related to childbirth. Coming out of the cinematic cliché relayed by many comedies, these preparations have a real preventive benefit.

PREPARATION FOR CHILDBIRTH: WHAT ARE THE INTERESTS?

Participating in childbirth preparation classes allows you to benefit from a special moment of discussion with a midwife and to provide answers to all the questions you may have, without taboos. The aim is to best prepare a pregnant woman to become aware of her body, to acquire the right gestures, to manage pain, to understand how childbirth and the first moments with her child will take place.

CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION: "CLASSIC" SESSIONS

CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION: "CLASSIC" SESSIONS

As part of traditional childbirth preparation (which is the most common), the sessions generally take place at the chosen maternity hospital or are given by a private midwife (ask your doctor or midwife to recommend classes). They are intended for expectant mothers, but also for their companions. The sessions are split into two main parts:

The theoretical part includes everything concerning your pregnancy, childbirth and post-delivery. You address questions related to the anatomy of your body: how is it made? How does it work? What is the perineum and what is it for? (the perineum is the set of muscles that extend from the anus to the genitals)… You address the stages of pregnancy and childbirth, discovering the place and your stay in the maternity ward. You also learn what happens after childbirth, feeding the child, the new organization of the family…

The practical part is dedicated to learning gestures. You practice relaxation exercises. You also learn breathing techniques for pushing and recovery between contractions and pain management. The midwife teaches you the right positions to take during childbirth, such as tilting the pelvis while working on muscle flexibility (this helps reduce pain and optimize the position for the baby's passage)...

In these classes, the midwife explains everything that awaits you and how it will happen. If you have chosen group classes, other future parents surround you and this is another opportunity to discuss your issues. The goal is always to reassure you.

Beyond traditional childbirth preparation, other approaches are offered depending on the qualifications of the midwives who lead the sessions.

HAPTONOMY, THREE-WAY CONTACT

HAPTONOMY, THREE-WAY CONTACT

Haptonomy takes the form of individual sessions in the presence of the mother and father, if he can be present, from four months of pregnancy (when the baby begins to pick up sounds, caresses, etc.). The exercise consists of using your hands to apply light pressure to the mother's belly. This allows you to get in touch with the future child and experience its development. On the one hand, if the father is present, he learns gestures to relieve the mother. On the other hand, the mother learns to guess where her child's extremities are and to position it.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN: BALANCING ENERGIES

Acupuncture comes from Chinese medicine and consists of finding the balance between the vital forces of your body (yin and yang). In individual sessions, the acupuncturist detects imbalances in energy movements and corrects them using tiny needles. During pregnancy, this alternative medicine can relieve pain without resorting to medication. The goal is to find harmony and balance and to be able to experience childbirth as well as possible.

SINGING WHILE PREGNANT, PRENATAL MUSIC

SINGING WHILE PREGNANT, PRENATAL MUSIC

If you like singing, you can use your organ for childbirth preparation sessions focused on sounds: prenatal music. It involves playing between frequencies, highs and lows. The vibrations thus created allow you to interact with the fetus. At the same time, vocal techniques work on breathing and low sounds help relax certain parts of the body (especially the pelvis during childbirth). It is not necessary to sing in tune to move towards this method.

SOPHROLOGY COURSE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

SOPHROLOGY COURSE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

Sophrology is a way to become aware of your body by visualizing it, through relaxation and breathing exercises. For a pregnant woman, the goal is to be able to visualize the baby in her belly and the journey it will take during childbirth. She will then accompany the birth and control her pain through relaxation methods and breathing techniques that intervene at the right time. This method can be used as part of a natural childbirth.

Other methods are available to you: yoga, pilates, prenatal aquagym, fasciatherapy... The choice is yours, in agreement with your doctor or midwife (do not hesitate to ask them questions).
