Your baby's hygiene: the complementarity of washing

Baby Hygiene

Hygiene and daily care for babies

The personal hygiene of the child between 0 and 3 years is specific. His skin is very fragile and baby still wears diapers which requires special hygiene of the seat. Whether it is a simple toilet , changing the diaper or a complete wash in the bath, all these hygiene gestures for your baby are complementary and essential. Regular cleaning of the seat does not replace a daily toilet or bath.

These are also special moments of exchange with your baby that will allow you to create and strengthen bonds with him. Are you wondering how to wash the different parts of your baby's body ? How to give baby body care? What to put in his toiletry bag? We give you some advice. Your baby will be clean from head to toe, for his greatest pleasure and yours.

Baby bath

Your baby is not yet clean and you change your baby's bottom several times a day. But for a more complete cleaning, bathing is necessary. Once a day or once every two days for newborns and if the baby has sensitive skin is the right frequency to adopt. The goal is to rid him of impurities and germs. Washing him several times a day could cause irritations to appear. A newborn's skin is fragile. You can do it in the morning or in the evening, depending on your organization. For some babies it is a time of relaxation and play. You can therefore favor a time of day when he is generally grumpy.

As for the bathroom, the room temperature should be between 22° and 24°. Before bathing your baby, you need to make sure that the little bathtub is clean, placed on a flat surface, and then prepare everything that will be useful in the bathtub and on the changing table (soap, bath towel, diaper, clothes, wipes, cream, etc.). Take care to fill your baby's bathtub with water at 37° (use a bath thermometer to check the temperature precisely). Bathing takes about five minutes for the little ones because they cool down very quickly. Wash baby with a mild soap all over the body (behind the ears, folds of skin, face, genitals, etc.) and dry him well as soon as the operation is finished, without forgetting the folds. When you bathe your baby, you take care that he is never cold and you use very gentle gestures.

Washing baby: from head to toe…

Hair : Even if there is not much hair, to wash your baby's hair you use a shampoo adapted to his age. You can wash his hair every two to three days. Do not do it every day, you risk drying out his skin. Shampoo can help prevent the formation of cradle cap on your baby's scalp. This formation of crusts is normal. They are due to the accumulation of sweat and sebum which clogs the pores of his skin. Then, with a baby brush, gently brush the top of the skull to perfect the operation. If the cradle cap persists, do not scratch it. There are specific products to help remove it.

Ears : To clean your baby's ears ,
do not use traditional cotton swabs. There are larger models for babies, designed to clean the outer ear. For a baby, the goal is to prevent the formation of a wax plug. You can also use a small compress. You can instill a few drops of physiological serum in the ear then tilt your child's head to let the residue flow out and clean the ear with a compress.

Eyes : Use a sterile compress lightly soaked in saline solution. Gently start from the outside of the eye, i.e. on the ear side, and work your way inwards, towards the nose. This will prevent the secretions from spreading all over the eye. Change the compress to clean the other eye.

Nose : If your baby's nose needs cleaning, you can use a few drops of saline solution placed at the entrance of each nostril. This helps to loosen nasal secretions that you remove with a piece of cotton rolled between your fingers to take the shape of the nostril. Your baby is likely to sneeze, but it is also a way of expelling foreign bodies from his nose. Do not use the same single-dose to clean the eyes. You risk contaminating your child's eyes with the viruses and bacteria present in his nose.

Face You can clean your face several times a day with water and a cotton pad or a cleansing solution. Don't forget to wash well behind the ears and in the folds of the neck, impurities are particularly lodged in these places .

Washing baby: …on feet

Hands : Hand hygiene is essential. By washing your baby's hands you limit the transmission of bacteria or viruses. Between babies, you can clean your baby's hands using a cotton pad soaked in cleansing water or, failing that, wipes. This operation should be repeated regularly throughout the day, before baby's meal, when returning from a walk, etc.

Nails : You can cut your baby's nails from one month old. You should preferably choose a time when he is calm and you should be careful not to cut his nails too short and not to leave any angles at the level of the nails to avoid scratches. To cut them, you can use specific scissors, curved with round tips or a specific baby nail clipper (from 6 months old).

Bottom : You clean your baby's bottom in
the bath and at each change. Change your baby as regularly as possible to avoid redness and irritation of the bottom. Clean thoroughly from front to back and in the folds with soapy water, cleansing milk or with oleo-calcareous liniment if you want a natural formula. Before putting a diaper back on, dry well with a clean compress, without forgetting the folds where irritations can develop.

The umbilical cord :
It falls off between a week and fifteen days after giving birth. You must disinfect it every day using a sterile compress soaked in a suitable antiseptic solution. Then, you dry the affected part. Once it has fallen off, continue the operation until the navel is completely healed. Be careful, you must avoid rubbing the navel with the diaper.
