How do I calculate how many weeks pregnant I am?

There are several techniques to determine what week of pregnancy a pregnant woman is in.

Thus, health professionals make their calculation by taking as a starting point the date of the first day of the last period. Amenorrhea means absence of periods, which is why they talk about a week of amenorrhea . Since ovulation occurs two weeks later, they add 2 weeks to the 39 weeks that a pregnancy (normally) lasts. In fact, if we count in weeks of amenorrhea, the pregnancy lasts 41 weeks (2 + 39 = 41).

As for the other method of calculating weeks of pregnancy, it starts at ovulation (because without an egg, no fertilization is possible, so it is estimated that both take place on the same date). If you are pregnant and ovulated two weeks ago, you are therefore 2 weeks pregnant, and 4 weeks amenorrhea (the last period having occurred two weeks earlier).

In the following articles, you will understand at which  week of pregnancy you will feel the different  symptoms of pregnancy , the  sex of the baby , the end of nausea (except exceptions of course), etc.

Also on the agenda (and rest assured, it is clearly stated in your pregnancy calendar once it is completed): the date on which to submit your pregnancy declaration, the date of your departure on  maternity leave  or even the date of your childbirth preparation classes.

1st trimester of pregnancy: from the 1st week to the 13th week

During the  first trimester of pregnancy , the belly is (generally) not yet visible, but several more or less discreet changes appear in the body of the future mother, such as nausea and sensitive breasts, a belly that slowly rounds out, intense fatigue... Symptoms due in particular to the increase in the level of HCG ( human chorionic gonadotropin hormone , also called "pregnancy hormone") in the blood.

The future baby passes from the embryonic stage to the fetal stage after 8 weeks of pregnancy, therefore in the second part of the first trimester. At the end of the third month of pregnancy , he is already able to raise his head, as well as move his arms and legs. His face is taking shape, and, if it is a boy, his sex is already apparent! At the end of this first trimester, he measures on average 12 cm and weighs 65 g.

The first trimester is also marked by registration at the maternity ward, which must be done as soon as possible once the pregnancy is confirmed, and by the pregnancy ultrasound. While the dating ultrasound is optional, the first trimester ultrasound (70% covered by health insurance) is an appointment not to be missed! It is one of the three ultrasounds recommended by the High Authority for Health (HAS).

2nd trimester of pregnancy: from the 14th week to the 26th week

From week 14 of pregnancy,  the 2nd trimester of pregnancy begins  . And this, until week 26 of pregnancy . That's it! The more or less disturbing symptoms observed at the beginning of pregnancy have disappeared, giving way to serenity and a more... present libido! At the end of this second trimester, the scales show an average of 6 to 8 kg of additional love and the waistline of the future mother has increased by 8 to 10 cm.

The future baby, meanwhile, continues to evolve gradually. His ears stabilize, his fingertips and toes form his nails and even his fingerprints. At the end of the sixth month of pregnancy , the fetus reacts to the sounds it perceives from its cocoon and even to some external noises. At this stage, it measures on average 33 cm and weighs 870 g.

Between the 22nd and 24th week of amenorrhea, the 2nd pregnancy ultrasound scan takes place. It allows us to check the development of the fetus and to make sure that everything is going well for him and his mother. This is also the time to know, if the wish is expressed, the sex of the future baby. If this ultrasound scan is performed before the end of the 5th month, then the coverage remains at 70% by Health Insurance.

3rd trimester of pregnancy: from the 27th week to the 39th week

From week 27 of pregnancy , the mother-to-be enters her 3rd trimester of pregnancy . It is marked by the  third ultrasound, which must be performed between the 32nd and 34th week of amenorrhea, or at the end of the 7th month. This time, the coverage is 100%.

The third trimester of pregnancy is also marked by the start of maternity leave. The opportunity to rest for the final stretch and prepare for the arrival of the future child. The sensations of heaviness are more and more present, the intestines are more and more lazy, and the retention of water and salt in the body sometimes leads to edema. The uterus, for its part, prepares for childbirth and can then contract several times a day. And this, until the big day! The pelvis gradually widens and the joints relax. Which is not always a pleasure. Impatience is felt.

As for the fetus, its neurons have gradually formed, and its eyes are now completely open. Little by little, it finds its place and adopts the position it will keep until delivery. At the end of this ninth month of pregnancy , it measures on average 50 cm and weighs approximately 3.3 kg. Here it is, ready to show the tip of its nose!
