Pregnancy rhinitis

How does pregnancy cause rhinitis?

Although benign, pregnancy rhinitis also called "vasomotor rhinitis" or "gestational rhinitis" is very uncomfortable. 6 solutions to relieve a blocked nose!

More fragile during pregnancy , the nasal mucous membranes can sometimes become inflamed and congested for several months. Nearly 30% of pregnant women develop it. It generally begins towards the end of the first trimester and lasts up to two weeks after giving birth. It is the drop in hormones that occurs at the time of birth that will clear your nasal passages.

This type of rhinitis is not due to external factors (pollution, viruses, allergies , etc.) but to a hormonal change. The increase in the level of estrogen in the blood produces a vasodilatory action on the nasal mucosa. This stimulates the glands to produce more mucus than normal. The nose becomes blocked and is accompanied by a discharge called "rhinorrhoea".

Symptoms associated with a stuffy nose include:

  • Tingling in the nasal passages;
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose;
  • A crusty appearance in the nasal cavity.
  • However, this respiratory disorder does not cause fever.

  2. Elevate your pillow at night to sleep. This will help you breathe better.
  3. Try the nasal dilator. This small accessory to be placed in the nostrils facilitates the passage of air.
  4. Also bet on nasal strips. They are applied to the wing of the nose and help to decongest it.
  5. Practice nasal washes with salt water. They help reduce edema.
  6. Avoid airborne irritants that may worsen congestion such as perfumes, cigarette smoke, and strong-smelling household products.
