It is not recommended to start diversifying your baby's diet before your baby is 4 months old.

BABY WEIGHT AT 5 MONTHS

From 6 to 9 kg for boys

From 5.5 to 8.4 kg for girls

At 5 months, it is the start of diversifying your baby's diet. Read our article on diversifying your baby's diet up to 1 year old.

Concerning dairy products, milk retains the most important place in your baby's diet. However, in order to diversify, yogurt can be introduced.

Very ripe fruits cooked or blended in the form of homogeneous compotes are very appreciated if their flavor is sweet like apple and pear. Vegetables (spinach, green beans, carrots, leeks and zucchini without seeds or skin) as well as potatoes must be finely blended into a puree.

Cereals can only be introduced in the form of gluten-free infant flours only if baby is a small eater (because it is now not recommended before 6 months).

It is recommended not to add salt or sugar in any form whatsoever (including honey).

When baby has at least one full meal and without milk per day, we move on to 2nd age infant milk. This transition can be done beyond 5 months. Milk should represent an intake of at least 500 mL per day, but in general, a 5-month-old baby absorbs approximately 700 to 900 mL of milk.

BABY'S WEIGHT AT 6 MONTHS

From 6.4 to 9.6 kg for boys who generally measure between 63 and 72 cm

From 5.9 to 9 kg for girls who generally measure between 62 and 70 cm

At 6 months, baby has generally started to diversify his diet. After introducing yogurt at 5 months, now is the time to offer him plain fromage blanc if you want to vary the pleasures.

At this age, infant cereal flours can now contain gluten.

Meat and fish can be offered mixed at a rate of two teaspoons per day, or a quarter of a hard-boiled egg. However, cold cuts should be limited.

Fats are making their way into diversification: it is possible to add a teaspoon of vegetable oil or a knob of butter to the puree.

Be careful not to give in to products that are too sweet! For example, it is strongly advised not to put honey on the pacifier, or to let the child fall asleep with his bottle. This practice promotes infant cavities on baby teeth which can directly impact the future permanent teeth.

When baby has at least one full meal without milk per day, we move on to 2nd age infant milk. Milk should represent an intake of at least 500 mL per day, but in general, a 6-month-old baby absorbs around 800 to 960 mL of milk. Read our article on diversifying baby's food up to 1 year.
